Every couple has a story.

And every story begins a little bit differently.

Today I'm going to share the beginning of our wedding story, and how it inspired us to take a leap of faith in discovering our passion.

My hope is that it will inspire you to take advantage of a wedding detail that is oftentimes overlooked, and help you shine on your big day.

How Our #1 Wedding Regret Inspired Our Dance Journey

Our Wedding Day

Like most married couples, my husband and I love to look back and reminisce on the wonderful memories of our wedding.

It was a day that was carefully planned over two years, with details that were extremely meaningful to us.

Including a friend playing violin for the ceremony, and my grandpa belting it out on the saxophone for the dinner hour.

Though we thought all of our bases were covered, there is one detail that somehow slipped through the cracks.  Can you guess what it is?  Let me give you a hint…

My husband and I have been married for over fifteen years and we've been dancing for over ten.

Which means?  You guessed it.  We did not learn how to dance until AFTER our wedding.

Here is how it all went down.

Our First Dance

You don't know how much I would love to tell you that we floated gracefully around the room with my Cinderella dress twirling in circles, but that would be a far stretch of the truth.

I remember it so clearly...

The DJ announced us onto the dance floor.  The room fell silent, three hundred of our guests were staring, and our hearts started racing with nerves.

During a moment where we could have felt comfortable and confident, we felt totally unprepared and panicked.

To make the best of it, we put a smile on our face, did the only version of dancing that we knew how, (which was rocking back and forth like teenagers at high school prom,) and carried on a conversation that went something like this...

“Everyone is staring."

"This feels awkward."

"Maybe you should try spinning me.”

“Why did we pick such a long song.”

And before we knew it, this special moment which was intended to celebrate our marriage had passed.

I'm not sure how we thought this dance would go, or if we even gave it much thought to begin with, but on the one day that you plan for everything to be perfect, feeling panicked and awkward was definitely not what we were hoping for.

Pretty sad right?  Well, I definitely don’t want to bring you down.

Continue reading because things start to look up from here and take a turn that we didn’t see coming.

 Our Dance Journey

This is my favorite part of our story.

Even though our first dance was a low point of our wedding day, there was some good (okay, who am i kidding, GREAT) that came from it.

Not too long after the wedding, we took a vacation to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac island, which is located in our home state of Michigan.

During our stay, we found ourselves inside a beautiful ballroom bursting at the seams with big band music, and a dance floor filled with dancers.

The gentlemen were leading their partners around the room, the ladies were twirling with smiles on their faces, and they were having the time of their lives.

It immediately struck a personal chord, and made us wish that we had enjoyed our first dance as much as these dancers were enjoying this moment.

We did not know how to dance that night, but it gave us the motivation to step outside of our comfort zone and into our first dance class.

We were nervous just like everyone else trying something new, but it was exhilarating, and we quickly fell in love with the way it made us feel connected to each other in a completely new and fun way.

We would spend many evenings turning on music and just practicing in our kitchen, which we still do from time to time, (highly recommend this, by the way!)

Before long, those dance classes and practice sessions in the kitchen developed into dancing and teaching on a regular basis.

How It Came Full Circle

Even though we would have loved to experience a magical first dance for our wedding, we are thankful for the experience, because it not only helped us discover a new passion, but it also lead us to teaching other wedding couples how to dance for their wedding.

Because of that experience, we are now able to relate to our wedding dance students in a unique way because we have been in their shoes, and we understand how to best help them feel comfortable, confident and prepared for their moment on the reception dance floor.

We’re able to provide them with the lessons, inspiration and encouragement that we wished we would have had on our big day.

It’s safe to say that dancing has completely swept us off our feet and we owe it all to our first dance experience.
